Defender of the crown II CD32

Sequel to Defender of the crown from 1986. Defender of the crown II was made for the CD32 by Cinemaware in 1991.

Defender of the Crown II
It is the year 1192. King Richard the Lionhearted has been captured by his enemies while returning to England from the Crusades. Four knights have volunteered to raise the ransom required to release the King, and free England from the clutches of Prince John. In Defender of the Crown, you choose to play the role of one of these knights. Your goal is to raise £20,000, the necessary ransom. Several avenues are open to you to increase your treasury — winning tournaments, capturing castles, con-
quering castles, skillful negotiating, etc. There are risks in all of these, and each knight has different skills which will determine your best course of action.

Getting Started
To begin, insert the disk in its caddy into the CDTV player. The game will begin automatically in one of the five languages based on your Preferences setting. First you will see an opening sequence. If you wish to skip it, press the B button when it begins, and you will go directly to the section describing the objective of the game. If you press B again, you skip to the section where you must choose your character.

NOTE: In certain configurations, your CDTV player or Amiga computer with a CDTV drive may not have enough memory to run.

Defender of the Crown II. In this case, the program will display the following message: “YOU MAY NOT HAVE ENOUGH MEMORY TO PLAY DEFENDER OF THE CROWN II”. The game will run anyway, but you may not have enough memory to finish the game. If you see this error message, you may try any of the following to free up memory in your system: unplug any external floppy disk drive attached to the system: remove any hard disk drives attached to the system; ensure your Amiga computer system has at least 1 Mbyte of Chip memory installed. If your sound system has only one speaker, do not use a Y adapter cable to mix both channels. This may cause the channels to lose synchronization. Just connect one of the two audio channels to the speaker.

Playing the Game
When asked to choose a character, use the arrow buttons on the left side of the remote control to move the dagger (pointer) to the Knight you wish to select, then press the A button. Pay close attention to the abilities listed for the Knight you choose, as they should influence your decisions as you play the game.

Next you will see the main selection screen, consisting of a map of England, and a choice of five activities. The date and the amount of ransom money raised so far are listed at lower left of the screen. (This is your “score”.) Your character starts the game with one territory and between £500 and £900. The light blue territory on the map is yours, and the dark green is owned by a Knight whom you may consider your ally. The other four colored territories are owned by enemy Knights. The white shield indicates the location of your army. Your ultimate goal in the game is to raise £20,000 to free King Richard. You will have approximately two years to do this. Sir Robin of Loxley has offered to help in your quest, but his assistance can only be used three times during the allotted period.

Use the UP and DOWN arrow buttons on the remote contro! to highlight the options - HOLD TOURNAMENT, SEEK CONQUEST, GO RAIDING, CHECK RESOURCES, and READ MAP. When the desired option is highlighted, press the A button to Select it.

Seek Conquest
Each territory you own will generate income every month, so the more land you own, the greater your wealth. Military conquest is one means of gaining more territories. When asked where you wish to move your army, use the arrow buttons to position the pointer, then press the A button to make your selection. The B button will return you to the main menu. You may only move your army into adjacent lands. Your soldiers may freely move through your own territories (blue), and will be granted Safe passage across lands owned by your ally (dark green areas). Territories which are not owned by other knights are undefended, and can easily be taken by your army early in the game. Battles will have to be fought for most occupied lands.

If an area is protected by a castle, your army will need a catapult to attack it. The catapult may launch either stones or Greek fire towards the castle walls. To operate the catapult, use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons to position the soldier in front of the rock or firepot you wish to use, then press the DOWN arrow. After the soldier loads your ammunition, use the UP and DOWN arrow buttons to adjust the tension of the catapult, and the A button to fire. Stones vary in weight, so the same catapult
settings will not always achieve the same result. Try to hit the top of the wall first, then lower your aim as damage to the wall increases. Hurling Greek fire over the wal! will damage the inside of the castle and demoralize its defenders. Be careful about the amount of damage you inflict. If you capture the castle it will take time to repair it during which the castle will be difficult for you to defend.

In the hand-to-hand part of the battles, you control the general intensity of your attack. Some battles can be won easily with few casualties, but if your army is outnumbered, FEROCIOUS ATTACK might still save the day, depending upon the morale of your troops. Robin of Loxley may offer to help before a coming battle. If you accept his offer, your ranks will be bolstered by his band of outlaws.

Hold Tournament
One way of gaining wealth and land is to joust for them. If you have at least £50, you may hold a tournament. (Sometimes other knights will call for a tournament, and you will be required to attend.) When asked to choose your first opponent, use the UP and DOWN arrow buttons to highlight the available choices, then the A button to indicate your choice. The greater the jousting skill of your opponent, the harder he will be to unseat. The stakes for that joust are chosen in the same manner as choosing an opponent. (Any time an information box appears on the screen, pressing the B button will cancel it.)

When the action begins and your opponent is coming toward you, use the arrow buttons to aim your lance at the center of his shield. The side view which follows will show who was successful. You may face up to three opponents, but if you lose, you are out of the tournament and will return to the main selection screen.

Go Raiding
You may undertake a daring lone raid of another knight's castle in hopes of stealing some of his treasure. When asked which Castle you wish to raid, use the arrow buttons to position the pointer, then press the A button to make your selection. Pressing the B button instead of the A button will return you to the main election screen, in case you change your mind about raiding.

After selecting a castle to raid, you will soon find your character facing a guard in the castle courtyard. This is where your swordfighting skills will come into play. The castle guards will attempt to take you alive, so that you can be held for ransom. Use the RIGHT and LEFT arrow buttons to move your character forward and backward, the B button to fend off your opponent's blow,
and the A button to thrust. Try to thrust when your adversary is in motion towards you.

Robin of Loxley and Friar Tuck may offer to go with you on the raid. They will be of great help in the courtyard, but once inside the castle, you're on your own.

A successful raid not only increases your own wealth, but weakens the owner of that castle, so he will have less money to mount a military campaign.

Check Kesources
This is the area of the game where you may view the current state of your resources, including the amount and distribution of your wealth, number of men in your army and guarding your castles, and various other items. This is also where you may begin construction of castles, re-distribute your wealth, send spies into other territories, build your army, and add to King Richard's ransom. Your advisors may be able to handle many of these items for you.

When CHECK RESOURCES is first chosen, you will be presented with a chart showing the current state of your affairs and two options. Choose LEAVE RESOURCES TO ADVISORS and your trusted advisors will do their best to take care of such chores as paying the troops, sending out spies, adding to King Richard's ransom, and many other chores necessary to run your small empire. You may still be alerted when your advisors feel your attention is necessary. As long as morale is high, your advisors can be trusted.

CONTROL YOUR OWN RESOURCES will present you with a list of options which give you direct control of your affairs. This may be done at any time during the game, and control can be handed back to your advisors any time you wish. The B button will return you to the main menu.

CONTROL YOUR OWN RESOURCES

Buy Land
If any territories are for sale, they will be highlighted on the map, and a brief description will appear. You may accept or decline the offer to purchase.

Sell Land
Use the arrow buttons to position the pointer to the territory you wish to offer for sale, then press the A button. If any knights are interested, they will make an offer. You may accept or decline.

Build Castle
Use the arrow buttons to move the pointer to the area where you wish to build a new castle, then press the A button to begin construction. Once begun, a castle will take several months to be useable.

Personnel
Use the UP and DOWN arrow buttons to highlight the option you wish. When either Knights or Soldiers are highlighted, you may use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons to hire or release men. Knights cost -£5 per month and soldiers cost £1 per month. Their salaries will be automatically deducted from your treasure each month. To adjust the number of guards at your castles, move the
outline to CASTLE GUARDS and press the A button. If you have more than one castle, you may now use the arrow buttons to choose one. Press the A button again when you've select, then use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons to transfer soldiers to and from the castle. Pressing the A button again locks in your choice.

Send a Spy
You may send your spy into enemy territories by using the arrow buttons to position the pointer on the chosen territory, then pressing the A button. It will take several days for the spy to return, and he won't always be able to deliver useful information.

Add to Ransom
You will be presented with a small textbox indicating the amount of your wealth. Use the UP and DOWN arrow buttons to move the desired amount into the Ransom total. Money deposited into the Ransom can be borrowed back until the beginning of the next month.

Read Map
Use the arrow buttons to position the pointer to any territory, then press the A button. A textbox will appear with information about the chosen territory. You may keep selecting different territories with the A button, or use the B button to return to the main menu.

Surprise Events
From time to time, events will occur over which you have no control. Roaming bandits may rob your tax collector, your army may be infiltrated by your enemies, maidens may be kidnapped, other knights may call for a joust, or you may be attacked without warning. You will need to respond to each of these challenges as the need arises.

Additional Hints
The character you choose to portray at the beginning of the game will have not only various skills in leadership, jousting, and swordfighting, but a certain “reputation” which will greatly effect how he is treated by other knights in the game. For instance, Wolfric may be attacked more often, while Cedric might receive offers of negotiation.

If you enter the game as Cedric of Rotherwood, you have the option of paying in a largely strategic way. Unoccupied territories can be taken without battle, and a great deal of wealth can be amassed through the buying and selling of land. Most enemy knights will be eager to do business with Cedric, and slow to attack him (unless he attacks them first!) Building castles increases the value of land.

In the joust, don't risk land or money if going up against an opponent with more jousting skill than you have. Jousting for fame is not as inconsequential as it might seem, as the loyalty of your army and the treatment you receive from other knights is influenced by your FAME rating.

You can sometimes tell how much money another knight has by how much he offers to bet in the joust. If he only offers -£100 or £200 then his finances are probably getting low.

Ifa Saxon maiden is captured by your enemies, it is often best to attempt a rescue, even if you have little swordfighting ability. You will have to weigh the price of being captured yourself against the cost of a lowered FAME rating in the eyes of your followers. Money deposited in the Ransom can be borrowed back until the beginning of the next calender month. Think about how you might take advantage of this fact, since Ransom money is safe from thieves, raids, and conquest, while your own treasure is always at risk.

Raiding your ally's castle will turn him against you, but it is considered fair to take his land or money in a tournament. If a castle’s walls are intact, the castle guards can usually hold out against an army up to ten times their number.

Special Features
On certain television sets, the game will begin in “cinemascope” mode, with a border above and below the picture. It is possible to force the program into “full-screen” mode. Simply press the A button during the opening title sequence. The game Should now occupy the full screen of your TV set. This full-screen image may cause a veritcal synch problem with your TV set (the image will roll vertically). This means that your TV will not support “full-screen mode”. If this happens, simply press the A button again to return to “cinemascope” mode. Defender of the Crown Il has a special feature which lets the game play all by itself! All you have to do is start up the program as usual, then not press any buttons. After 20 seconds, the game will start playing, in a random fashion. You just sit back and watch. If you like, you may break into game and take control at any time by simply pressing a button on the remote control. After starting the game, if you do not press any buttons on the remote control for a certain time, the game screen will disappear and a message saying simply “Defender of the Crown II” appears instead. This is to save your television set from phosphor burnout. To continue play, simply press any button on the remote control.

The origin of Defender of the Crown
Defender of the Crown was originally written as a computer game for the Amiga Personal Computer and was published by Cinemaware as one of its first “interactive movie” games. The game set a new standard for computer illustration and achieved instant popularity. The original game was converted to other computer platforms and was also enhanced with sound and released as one of the first games on CD-ROM for the MS-DOS™ PC. For Defender of the Crown Il, the original artist, Jim Sachs was commissioned to enhance the game with additional graphics, animation, and game-play. The entire game was redesigned to take advantage of the latest technology only available with the CDTV player. The vast space available (about 750 times that of the single floppy disk used for the original version) allows not only magnificent graphics, animation, music, sound effects, and speech, but five different language versions of the game all on a single CDTV disc.
